How are the exchange rates calculated?
Exchange rates come from the European Central Bank (ECB), which publishes reference rates for 30+ currencies every business day around 16:00 CET. These are mid-market rates — the actual rate you get from a bank or exchange service may include a markup or fee.
How often are the exchange rates updated?
The ECB publishes new reference rates every working day around 16:00 CET (Central European Time). Rates are not updated on weekends or ECB holidays. The converter shows the most recent available rate and displays the date it was last updated.
What is the difference between mid-market rate and bank rate?
The mid-market rate (also called the interbank rate) is the midpoint between buy and sell prices on the global currency market. This is the "real" exchange rate. Banks and exchange services add a markup of 1-5% on top of the mid-market rate as their profit margin. Our converter shows the mid-market rate from the ECB.
Which currencies are supported?
We support 30+ major currencies including USD (US Dollar), EUR (Euro), GBP (British Pound), JPY (Japanese Yen), CHF (Swiss Franc), CAD (Canadian Dollar), AUD (Australian Dollar), CNY (Chinese Yuan), INR (Indian Rupee), SEK (Swedish Krona), NOK (Norwegian Krone), and many more. All rates are sourced from the European Central Bank.
How do I convert USD to EUR?
Enter the amount in the "From" field, select USD as the source currency, and EUR as the target currency. The conversion happens instantly. For example, at a rate of 0.92, 100 USD would convert to approximately 92 EUR. You can also use the swap button to quickly convert EUR to USD.
Why is the exchange rate different from what my bank shows?
Banks and money transfer services add a margin (markup) to the mid-market exchange rate, typically 1-5%. This is how they earn revenue on currency exchanges. The rate shown in our converter is the ECB mid-market reference rate — the fairest benchmark rate. Always compare the bank's offered rate against the mid-market rate to see how much markup they charge.
Can I convert between two non-EUR currencies?
Yes! While the ECB rates are quoted against EUR, our converter automatically cross-calculates between any two supported currencies. For example, to convert USD to GBP, we calculate USD→EUR→GBP using both rates. This is the standard method used by financial institutions worldwide.
Is this currency converter free to use?
Yes, completely free with no signup required. All calculations happen in your browser using publicly available ECB exchange rate data. We don't store your conversion data or require any personal information.
Exchange rates are fetched from the ECB via Frankfurter API. No personal data is stored or sent.
