How to Use

  1. 1 Enter the total distance of your trip in kilometers (km) or miles (mi)
  2. 2 Input your vehicle's fuel efficiency (L/100km, km/L, MPG US, or MPG UK)
  3. 3 Enter the current price of fuel per liter or gallon
  4. 4 Optional: Check "Round trip" if you are driving back along the same route
  5. 5 Optional: Enter the number of people to calculate the split cost per person

What You Get

A comprehensive trip planning tool that calculates total fuel volume needed, total trip cost, and cost per passenger. Supports all major international measurement units with seamless real-time conversion.

Input: 400 km, 6.5 L/100km, €1.65/L

Output: Total Fuel: 26 L, Total Cost: €42.90

Input: 150 miles, 25 MPG, $3.20/gal, 3 people

Output: Total Cost: $19.20 ($6.40 per person)

How do you calculate fuel cost for a trip?

To calculate fuel cost, you need three numbers: trip distance, your car's fuel efficiency, and the price of gas. First, divide the distance by fuel efficiency to find the total amount of fuel needed. Then, multiply that fuel amount by the price per gallon or liter. Our calculator handles the math automatically, even if you mix metric and imperial units.

What is the formula for calculating gas cost?

If using MPG (Miles Per Gallon): (Distance in miles ÷ MPG) × Price per gallon. If using metric (L/100km): (Distance in km ÷ 100) × L/100km × Price per liter. For example, a 300-mile trip in a car getting 30 MPG with gas at $3.50/gal costs: (300 ÷ 30) × 3.50 = 10 gallons × $3.50 = $35 total.

How do I split gas money with friends?

To fairly split gas money, first calculate the total cost of the trip, then divide it by the number of people in the car (including the driver). You can easily do this in our calculator by setting the "Number of People" field. Some people also prefer to add a small percentage to the total for vehicle wear and tear.

What is a good MPG?

A "good" MPG (Miles Per Gallon) depends on the vehicle type. Modern compact cars typically get 30-40 MPG, midsize SUVs get 20-30 MPG, and trucks log 15-25 MPG. Hybrid vehicles often exceed 45-50 MPG. In metric terms, a good fuel economy is anything below 6.0 L/100km.

How much fuel will I use on a 500-mile road trip?

If your car averages 25 MPG, you will use exactly 20 gallons of fuel for a 500-mile trip (500 ÷ 25 = 20). If gas costs $3.50 per gallon, the trip will cost $70 in fuel.
