How is GPA calculated?

GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated by dividing the total quality points by the total credit hours. Quality points for each course equal the grade value multiplied by credit hours. For example, an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course gives 12.0 quality points. If you have 45 total quality points across 12 credit hours, your GPA is 45 / 12 = 3.75.

What is a 4.0 GPA scale?

The 4.0 GPA scale is the standard grading system used by most U.S. colleges and high schools. Each letter grade corresponds to a numerical value: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. Plus (+) and minus (-) modifiers adjust the value by 0.3 (e.g., B+ = 3.3, B- = 2.7). An A+ is typically capped at 4.0, though some institutions award 4.3.

What is a good GPA?

GPA standards vary, but general benchmarks are: 3.7-4.0 = Excellent (Summa Cum Laude range), 3.5-3.69 = Very Good (Magna Cum Laude range), 3.0-3.49 = Good (Cum Laude range), 2.0-2.99 = Satisfactory, below 2.0 = Below average. Most graduate schools require at least a 3.0 GPA for admission. Top-tier programs often expect 3.5 or higher.

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

An unweighted GPA uses the standard 4.0 scale where all classes are treated equally. A weighted GPA gives extra points for honors, AP, or IB courses — typically on a 5.0 scale (e.g., an A in AP class = 5.0 instead of 4.0). This calculator uses the standard unweighted 4.0 scale with credit-hour weighting, which is the most commonly used system in college GPA calculations.

How do credit hours affect GPA?

Credit hours determine how much each course impacts your GPA. A 4-credit course has twice the impact of a 2-credit course. For example, getting a B (3.0) in a 4-credit course contributes 12 quality points, while a B in a 1-credit course contributes only 3 quality points. This is why performing well in high-credit courses is especially important for your GPA.

Can I calculate my cumulative GPA across semesters?

Yes. Simply add all courses from all semesters into the calculator. The GPA calculation uses total quality points divided by total credits, so it works the same way whether you enter one semester or your entire academic career. For example, if Semester 1 had 15 credits with a 3.5 GPA (52.5 quality points) and Semester 2 had 16 credits with a 3.8 GPA (60.8 quality points), your cumulative GPA is (52.5 + 60.8) / (15 + 16) = 3.65.

Is this GPA calculator accurate?

Yes. This calculator uses the standard quality-point method used by most U.S. colleges. GPA = Total Quality Points / Total Credit Hours. All calculations run entirely in your browser. Note that some schools use different scales or policies (e.g., A+ = 4.3, Pass/Fail exclusions), so always verify with your institution.

Is this calculator free?
