How do I reduce PNG file size?

PNG uses lossless compression, so file size reduction is limited. For smaller files, convert to WebP (50-70% smaller) or JPEG (if transparency is not needed). PNG optimization tools can only reduce size by 10-30%.

What is the difference between PNG and JPEG?

PNG is lossless (no quality loss) and supports transparency. JPEG is lossy (some quality loss) but much smaller for photos. Use PNG for graphics, logos, screenshots. Use JPEG for photographs.

Why are PNG files so large?

PNG preserves every pixel exactly, which requires more data than lossy formats. A photo saved as PNG can be 5-10x larger than JPEG. PNG is designed for graphics where exact pixel reproduction matters.

Does PNG support animation like GIF?

Standard PNG does not support animation. APNG (Animated PNG) exists but has limited browser support. Use GIF or WebP for animated images with broad compatibility.

How do I convert JPEG to PNG?

Upload JPEG files and download as PNG. Note that this does not improve quality - the JPEG compression loss is permanent. The PNG will be larger but will not degrade further with edits.

What is PNG-8 vs PNG-24?

PNG-8 uses 256 colors maximum (like GIF), resulting in smaller files. PNG-24 uses millions of colors and full transparency. Use PNG-8 for simple graphics, PNG-24 for photos and complex images.

Is PNG or WebP better for transparent images?

WebP is 50-70% smaller than PNG at the same quality with full transparency support. Use PNG only when WebP compatibility is a concern (older browsers, specific software requirements).

How do I make a PNG background transparent?

This tool converts formats but cannot edit image content. To make backgrounds transparent, use image editing software like Photoshop, GIMP, or online background removal tools first.

Can I compress PNG without losing quality?

PNG compression is already lossless, so re-saving cannot make it smaller without changing the image. Optimization tools can strip metadata and improve compression efficiency, typically saving 10-30%.
