What is an EAN-8 barcode?
EAN-8 is a shorter version of EAN-13, using only 8 digits. It's designed for small products where a full EAN-13 barcode won't fit, such as chewing gum, pens, or small cosmetic items.
When should I use EAN-8 instead of EAN-13?
Use EAN-8 when your product packaging is too small for an EAN-13 barcode (which needs about 37mm width). EAN-8 requires only about 27mm width. You need GS1 approval to use EAN-8 codes.
How do I get an EAN-8 number?
EAN-8 numbers are assigned directly by your local GS1 organization. Unlike EAN-13, you cannot create them yourself from a company prefix. Apply to GS1 with proof that your product packaging is too small for EAN-13.
Can scanners read both EAN-8 and EAN-13?
