What is an ITF-14 barcode?
ITF-14 (Interleaved 2 of 5) is a 14-digit barcode used on outer packaging like shipping cartons, cases, and pallets. It identifies trade items at packaging levels above the individual product (which uses EAN-13 or UPC).
What is the difference between ITF-14 and EAN-13?
EAN-13 goes on individual products (point-of-sale scanning). ITF-14 goes on outer packaging like shipping boxes and cartons (warehouse scanning). ITF-14 is designed to be printed on corrugated cardboard and scanned at longer distances.
Why does ITF-14 have bearer bars?
Bearer bars (thick lines surrounding the barcode) prevent misreads when printing on corrugated cardboard. The uneven surface of cardboard can cause the scanner to read partial bars incorrectly. Bearer bars contain the barcode area and improve reliability.
How is an ITF-14 number structured?
An ITF-14 number has 14 digits: a packaging indicator (1 digit, 1-8), followed by the product's EAN/UPC number (12 digits), and a check digit. The packaging indicator shows the level (case, pallet, etc.).
