What is a Pharmacode?

Pharmacode (also called Laetus code or Pharmaceutical Binary Code) is a barcode used exclusively in pharmaceutical packaging. It encodes a single number (3-131070) and is designed for packaging line verification to prevent mix-ups between different medications.

How does Pharmacode differ from other barcodes?

Unlike Code 128 or EAN-13, Pharmacode uses a binary system with only thick and thin bars (no spaces encode data). It's intentionally simple and robust — designed to be read even when printed poorly on blister packs or labels.

What numbers can Pharmacode encode?

Pharmacode can encode integers from 3 to 131,070. The minimum is 3 because the encoding requires at least two bars. The maximum 131,070 comes from the binary encoding using up to 16 bars (2^1 + 2^2 + ... + 2^16 + 1).

Is Pharmacode used outside pharmaceuticals?

While designed for pharma, Pharmacode is sometimes used in other industries for packaging line control where simple, robust identification is needed. However, it's primarily associated with pharmaceutical manufacturing and GMP requirements.
